A Mother’s Torment by Xavier Poe Kane

Second freelance interior book design project for this author. A traditional serif font was chosen for the body of the text to replicate the style of classic novels. The layout was formatted to imitate the first book I designed for this author in an effort to create a unique style to how his future books will appear. Later converted to an e-book format.

Broken Hearts & Other Horrors by Xavier Poe Kane

First freelance interior book design project for this author. Worked closely with the author and his editor, Kayla Randolph, to bring his work to the page through thoughtful font choices and precise layout. Each chapter opener features its own unique typeface and ornament central to the story it tells. Ornaments used throughout the whole text serve as motifs to the larger plot. A serif font was used throughout the body of the text to add to the historical element many of the stories tell, while a sans serif balanced out the running material.

Scott Pilgrim vs. The World a Screenplay
May 2022
As the final project for my graduate book design and production class, led by George Restrepo, I produced and printed a screenplay book of the screenplay Scott Pilgrim vs. The World. Utilizing methods like design grids, typeface research, and peer critiques, I carefully layed out the screenplay, using Courier New to emulate the screenplay and special Comicraft typefaces to call back to the graphic novels origins.

Entirely designed both cover and interior layout, including illustrations. Presented the author with multiple original cover designs to choose from before finalizing. Utilized drop-cap styles to signify chapter openers to give the text a traditional, elegant impression as per the author’s request. Limited print runs were sold.
